Preston, Idaho - - - Vyrl D. Goff
Preston - Vyrl Dodge Goff passed away November 20, 2012 after a prolonged battle with melanoma. He was born December 3, 1924 in Preston, Idaho, the youngest of ten children. He spent his entire childhood in his beloved hometown of Preston. He attended elementary through high school there and made some of his dearest, lifelong friends from those earliest years. He and his beloved wife, Madge, returned to live in Preston after retirement in a home their son, Randy, designed for them.
His military service was varied in assignment and spread over many diverse locations. He proudly served in the Navy on submarine duty in World War II and on the USS Chowenoc during the Korean War. He graduated as a Civil Engineer from the University of Utah, after initially contemplating a career in medicine. He began his college experience at the University of Idaho in Moscow. His work took him all over the western United States, including Alaska. He made many contributions to the infrastructure of our country as he and his construction crews built bridges, roads, and even had a part in building the Alaska Pipeline.
His LDS church service included serving in the Bishopric, on High Counsel and in a District Presidency in Alaska. He was Stake President in the Redding, California Stake. He also served a full time mission in Florida with his sweetheart, Madge. He was very dedicated to his callings and was respected and loved by those he served.
Vyrl was a very devoted family man. He loved spending time with his wife and children, and as time progressed, with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He often worked out of town during the week, but would take heroic measures to be able to reunite with his loved ones on the weekend. Saturday morning breakfasts were something the whole family looked forward to as Vyrl cooked up a feast for their consumption. Family meant everything to him!
He is survived by his daughters: Sandra (Wade) Bitner, Wendy (Casey) Bowen, Lesle (Marc) Davis, Michelle (David) Fowles, Kim (Stewart) Sagers, 25 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, and his brother Charles W. (Gloris) Goff. He was preceded in death by his wife Madge, son Randy, parents, and eight brothers and sisters and their spouses.
