Shirley Hobbs, 95, passed away peacefully at her apartment home in Courtyard at Jamestown Assisted Living in Provo, Utah on December 19, 2024. Shirley was born in Franklin, Idaho on October 12, 1929 to Cliff and Grace Whitehead in their home. She was the oldest of 4 daughters born to her parents. She learned the value of hard work and discipline growing up on their family farm. She loved to ride horses and became a very accomplish rider.
After graduating from Preston High School, she attended Utah State University for a year. She married her high school sweetheart, Frayne Hobbs, on September 21, 1948 and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on September 21, 1949. They began their life together living in Salt Lake City. They both worked to provide for a growing family.
After having 3 sons, they moved to Idaho Falls for Frayne’s employment. Their 4th son was born while they lived in Idaho Falls. They subsequently moved to a small 20-acre farm outside of Shelley, Idaho to raise their boys. In time their 5th child, a beautiful, sweet baby girl joined their family.
In 1984, Frayne and Shirley moved to Orem, Utah. Frayne passed away there in 2011. Shirley continued to live in their Orem home until April 2019, when she moved to her Jamestown apartment home. Shirley developed a deep and abiding faith in our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ from a young age. She made sure the gospel of Jesus Christ was taught and lived in each of her homes. Anyone who entered their home was always warmly welcomed and immediately felt included. Above their door, a sign read “The Gathering Place” which indeed it was!
Shirley served with love in a variety of callings in the wards in which she lived. Her Christlike service to family and friends is a great example to us all. Shirley loved to be in the yard and garden working. She was very good at growing things and making her yard and garden a pleasant place to be. As she worked, you could often hear her humming demonstrating her happiness and her gratitude for her blessings.
Shirley is survived by her four sons Brad, Randy, Barry and Steve and their wives; and by her daughter Pam and her husband. She has 25 grandchildren, 92 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
The family expresses deep appreciation to Jamestown Assisted Living, A Plus hospice, and many friends who have been so angelic to Shirley.
