DAYTON- Sherwin Joseph Atkinson, 83, died on June 30, 2012, in the Heritage Home in Preston, Idaho. He was born on Mother's Day, May 12, 1929, in Dayton, Idaho, to Mabel Deem Law and Earl Joseph Atkinson. He was the fourth in a family of five children. He married Elva Kerr on Friday, the 13th of December, 1963, in the Logan LDS Temple.

Sherwin attended elementary school in Dayton, high school in Weston until that school was destroyed by fire, then finished high school in Clifton. He graduated from high school and seminary in May of 1947. He served in the Central Atlantic States mission from June 1950-June 1952. He graduated from Utah State Agricultural College (USU) with a degree in Poultry Husbandry and worked for three years as a Research Assistant in Poultry Husbandry at Western Washington Experiment Station in Puyallup, Washington, then later as a Research Associate in Poultry Husbandry at Utah State University until he retired in 1992.

Sherwin was active in the LDS Church, serving as a home teacher and Sunday School teacher for many years. He received the Master M-Man award and was scoutmaster for more than ten years. He was Financial Clerk in the Dayton Ward for eleven years.

Sherwin is survived by his wife, Elva; by Ivan Joseph (Virginia) Atkinson of Lincoln City, Oregon; Linda Kerr (Blaine) Norris of West Fielding, Utah; Elva Diane (John) Malmquist of Nibley, Utah; twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, by a brother, Melvin; sisters, Erline (Walter LeGrand) Whipple, Joyce Atkinson, Frances Myrtle (Henry) Berghout and by a grandson, Arland Norris.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 6, 2012, at noon in the Dayton Ward Chapel with Bishop G. Wesley Beutler conducting. Friends may call Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 1005 South 800 East, Preston, Idaho, and Friday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Dayton, Idaho Cemetery.
