Ruth Lindsay Shumway, dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died peacefully on February 16, 2009, of causes incident to age. She leaves behind a legacy of loving and caring. Born February 11, 1922 to Samuel J. and Mary Alice Powell Lindsay in Taylorsville, Utah. Married James Gail Shumway in the Salt Lake LDS temple on June 25, 1947. They had 6 children that they raised together until her husband's untimely death in 1967.
Her life was filled with many notable accomplishments. She served multiple terms as on the Garland City Council, was voted as the Box Elder County Mother of the Year, and received a community service award from Garland City, which included the construction of a bowery at the Garland Park that was named in her honor. Ruth worked for many years as a librarian in the Box Elder County School district. Combined with this assignment were many opportunities to teach dancing to the school kids and to choreograph many school presentations. Later she served as a secretary in the Translation Department of the LDS Church.
She obtained her education at Granite High School and Utah State University. She was a faithful member of the LDS Church her entire life and served in many callings. The highlight of her church experience was her mission to South Africa where she labored in the same mission in which her husband served many years before. Ruth built her life around her children and just days before her death enjoyed the company of nearly her entire family at a celebration of her 87th birthday.
She is survived by two brothers; Richard Lindsay (Marion), Kenneth Lindsay (Bonnie), one sister, Mary Jensen (Forrest), her six children; James L. Shumway, Stephen L. Shumway (Kathleen), Jeffrey L. Shumway (Shelley), Lori E. Nielsen (Doug), Carol S. Mackay, and Eric L. Shumway (Jana), 16 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, one brother (Powell), and one sister (Grace Mackay).
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 20, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bountiful North Stake Center, 1540 N. 400 E., Bountiful, Utah. Friends may call Thursday, February 19 from 6- 8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main St., Bountiful, Utah and from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 20 at the stake center.
