Rolf Hyrum Schumann passed away April 25, 2014 at Logan Regional Hospital. Rolf was born July 17, 1952 in Elko, Nevada to Hyrum F. and Marlena Pohlsander Schumann. His first twelve years were spent on the family ranch in Clover Valley, Nevada where he began to cultivate a lifelong passion for the cattle industry. Four years after the passing of his father, the family relocated to Peoa, Utah. There the family ran a successful dairy where his older brother Dallas taught him the value of hard work.
Rolf was a graduate of South Summit High School where he was active in sports. He was awarded All State honors in football and All Region in basketball. He attended Utah State University for a year before leaving to serve an LDS mission in the Southern states. Upon his return he attended USU and later transferred to Brigham Young University. At both schools he was actively involved with the livestock judging team, serving as coach at BYU. While at BYU, he met Cathlyn Stone and they married in 1974. They enjoyed raising three children who also learned the value of hard work. They later divorced.
He made a living as a ranch manager and herdsman where he utilized his extensive knowledge of cattle genetics and conformation. He had an exceptional ability to see the potential for a calf to become a champion. Many livestock breeders sought his opinion when selecting cattle, both purebred and club calves. Rolf was an admired judge for livestock shows from county fairs to very prestigious shows. He was especially well known for working with and teaching youth in showmanship classes. Due to his entertaining ability to obtain bids as a ring man or auctioneer he was a popular addition to any livestock sale.
Rolf is survived by his children Jennifer (Robert) Fox, Rachel (Eric) Bennett, and Matthew (Beth); nine grandchildren; siblings Celia (Jerry) Marchant, Dallas (Beth), Venna Ballard, Helen Schumann, Karen (Wally) Wright, and Kathryn Cahoon. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother Reed. He was blessed to have extended family who took loving care of him when his health declined.
