Richard Dean Hobbs, born July 24th, 1938 in Preston Idaho, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024 surrounded by his family. Born to Raymond and Margaret Hobbs, Richard grew up in a home filled with love, laughter and faith. He grew up with his older sister, Geralyn, and three younger sisters, Helen, Louise, and Valyn in a close-knit and loving family.
Richard graduated from West Side High School in 1956, where he excelled in many sports, particularly baseball, basketball and football. He was renowned for his natural athleticism and demonstrated leadership both on and off the field. His passion for learning led him to Utah State University where he earned his undergraduate degree. He then furthered his education by obtaining a Doctorate in Veterinary Science from Washington State University.
On June 20th 1958, Richard married his high school sweetheart, Lois Schvaneveldt, in the Logan Utah Temple. Their marriage was a true partnership filled with love, devotion and shared faith. Together they raised four children: Chad, Lisa, Clay, and Cory, who were the pride and joy of Richard's life.
Richard's distinguished career as a veterinarian took him across the US and Canada where he built many lasting friendships and professional relationships. In spite of his busy career, his family always remained the center of his world. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. In his final days, Richard’s great-grandchildren were the last ones to communicate with him, bringing a smile to his face.
Richard and his father shared a passion for racehorses and chariot racing. Richard owned and bred many horses, including a few champions and ones that he humorously referred to as the "not-so-fast" ones. His love for both the sport and animals brought joy to his life. He forever cherished the camaraderie and the enduring memories made at the races.
Throughout his life, Richard faithfully served in many callings within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in several bishoprics where he compassionately guided and mentored others with wisdom born of his varied experiences. His leadership and dedication to these callings left a lasting impact on who felt his love through service.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Lois, and his children Chad (Carolyn), Lisa (Dean), Clay (Penny), Cory (Julie), as well as his 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Richard's legacy will be remembered by his kindness, integrity, and dedication to his family, church, and community. His love, laughter, and strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
