Raymond "Ray" Wickam Ransbottom

Preston, Idaho - - - Raymond W. (Ray) Ransbottom

Preston - Raymond (Ray) Wickham Ransbottom, 90, passed away early Tuesday morning, October 30, 2012 at the Heritage Home in Preston, Idaho. He was born May 21, 1922 in Whitney, Idaho to James Raymond and Freda Wickham Ransbottom.

He spent his childhood on the family farm in Whitney with his sisters Helen, Adele, and Martha where he developed his love of the outdoors and the freedom of rural life. He attended technical training at what is now Idaho State University. Around this time he was introduced by his cousin Claire (Peck) Hull to Peck's wife's sister Madge Hiatt. They later married and she became the one and only love of his life until, and beyond, her death in 2001.

Near the end of World War II he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was stationed near Spokane, Washington and trained as a diesel mechanic. As the war was ending, he returned home to the Whitney area, and purchased part of his father's farm where he and Madge built a home, including cutting and milling the lumber, designing the home and erecting the building. He later used these skills in building several other homes in the Preston area. He had a unique talent for visualizing and designing projects even though he had no formal training. He could also fix almost anything mechanical. He was employed by Ken's Electric in Preston, and later obtained his own electrical contractors license. His true passion was always for the farm, however, and eventually that became his primary occupation.

He and Madge raised six children, Jerry, Susan, Annette, Neil, Bart, and Jay. His children were raised with his wonder of the outdoors, and all spent many years camping and traveling throughout the Mountain West. He also served a number of years as a scouter and scoutmaster in the Whitney troop. Although he was very intelligent, he was, at the core, a simple uncomplicated person with a basic integrity that was evident to everyone who knew him.

Ray is survived by his children Jerry (Wendy) Ransbottom, Annette (Sam) McNair, Bart (Kathy) Ransbottom, and Jay (Franette) Ransbottom, seven outstanding and talented grandsons, 13 beautiful and brilliant granddaughters, and numerous great grandchildren, and his sister Martha Hansen. He is also survived by a son-in-law Jim Westenskow, and a daughter-in-law Terri Ransbottom. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Madge, a daughter Susan, and a son Neil, and his sisters Adele Jensen, and Helen Packer.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 2, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the Whitney LDS chapel with Bishop Ryan Jones conducting. A viewing will be held Friday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Whitney Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Webb Funeral Home and memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.webbmortuary.com
