Nadine Keller Umbel left us far too soon passing away on July 11, 2018, at the young age of 70 (almost 71). Nadine left us while hospitalized in Boise, Idaho, surrounded by her children following a brief and sudden illness. Nadine was born on July 19, 1947, in Ogden, Utah to Wenzell Urias Keller and Betty Jean Hammon Keller (Henderson). Nadine spent almost her entire life in Franklin County growing up in Riverdale, attending schools in Preston, and living in her beloved Preston home. Nadine spent the last years of her life enjoying time with her children and grandchildren primarily in the Boise area. Nadine met Richard Lee Umbel while he was visiting from Pennsylvania. It was an instant connection and they married on March 13, 1965, and were loving companions until Rich’s death in 2013. Rich and Nadine made their home in Preston where they were active community members and devoted members of the LDS church. Rich and Nadine had three children, Sandra, Richard and Christa, all of whom were born and raised in Preston. Nadine attended cosmetology school and spent her working life as a beautician. For many years Nadine had a beauty shop in her home and would juggle multiple processes and cuts all at the same time. Eventually Nadine moved her beauty services to Image Makers on Main Street in Preston until her retirement.
Nadine spent her life dedicated to raising her children, supporting her husband, making the ladies of the community beautiful, gardening, and participating in community and church activities. Nadine raised an extensive garden and took pride in turning the produce into delicious meals and preserves. Nadine would crochet or knit slippers or mittens for everyone. Nadine was active in the Boy Scout programs, both in conjunction with Rich and separately as a den mother and other positions. Nadine received great joy through working with the young men in this program. Nadine campaigned with Rich and was by his side as he sought and was elected as the Franklin County Assessor for twelve years. Nadine would never miss an activity that her children or grandchildren participated in. Even after the children left home Rich and Nadine would drive for hours to cheer and support the family activities and accomplishments. For every family gathering Nadine would make her famous rolls - no one could ever replicate this delicacy. Her family will deeply miss Nadine’s presence at every family gathering and special moments as we have been fortunate to have her close by in recent years.
Nadine took tremendous pride in her grandchildren. Nadine and Rich were blessed with nine grandchildren that were perfect in their eyes. The older grandchildren remember spending time with Nadine in Preston going to movies, participating in the Preston rodeo events, working in the beauty shop, seeing the Christmas lights, and just hanging out. The five younger grandchildren have been fortunate to have Nadine part of their daily lives where she would attend their football games, support through cancer treatments, buy them ice cream before dinner, and generally spoil them. Her absence will be particularly felt by these young ones who will not understand the loss of her companionship and daily love.
Nadine was preceded in death by her beloved husband Richard L. Umbel, her father Wenzell Keller, her stepfather Robert Henderson, and her sister Wendelene Seamons. Nadine is survived by her three children Sandra Lee Umbel Clapp (Roch), Richard Dean Umbel (Sandi), and Christa Lee Umbel Smith (Adam). Nadine is further survived her nine grandchildren, Bryce Umbel, Jordan Umbel (Devon), Auriana Clapp-Younggren (Jeremy), MacKenzie Williamson (Corbin), Dante Rock, Dason Rock, Tatiana Smith, Amiyah Smith, and Urijah Smith and her three great grandchildren Keller, Kittson, and Clayton. Nadine also leaves behind her mother, Betty Jean Henderson, her sister Laurine Bingham, and her brother Daren Henderson.
