Mink Creek - Merlin Roy McKay, 74, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2012 at his home in Mink Creek, Idaho. He was born on January 24, 1937 in Logan, Utah to Melvin William and Emmeline Chatterton McKay. He married Opal Smith in the Logan Temple on December 11, 1959.

He was the oldest of his family and learned the farm life working side by side with his father and mother. He loved to fish and hunt and play softball. For many years he played in the all church tournaments in Salt Lake City. Her served in the National Guard. He worked on a road construction crew for several years and was part of the group that built the Foster Reservoir Dam as well as Highway 34 to Riverdale. After living in Weston and Riverdale, they moved to the farm in Mink Creek where they raised two sons, Lin and Paul.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in various callings including Elder's Quorum President and as a counselor in the Bishopric of the Mink Creek Ward. He and Opal were the beginning of many great ward activities like water skiing, tubing parties, and river rafting trips. Merlin worked as a mechanic at Cove Concrete, Parson Ready Mix, and at Treasure Canyon Calcium plant. He enjoyed working with many close friends there.

He is survived by his sons, Lin (Sharla) McKay, of Mink Creek, ID; Paul (Terrie) McKay, of Mink Creek; sisters Joye Hansen, of Preston, ID; Lila (Merlin) Waite, of Hauula, HI; Margie (Stewart) Jacobson, of Centerville, UT; and Roselle (Darrel) Checketts, of Preston; and brothers Norlis (Thelma) McKay, of Showlow, AZ; and Shirl (Maureen) McKay, of Hyde Park, UT; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Opal, and a brother Clynn.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the Mink Creek LDS Chapel with Bishop Kent Egley conducting. A viewing will be held on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 1005 South 800 East, in Preston and Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church in Mink Creek.
