Mali M McKenzie

Mali M McKenzie, 47, passed away at peace, suddenly after an unexpected illness took her to her eternal home. Mali is preceded in death by her parents Lawrence and Myrle Hegdahl. She is survived by her husband Adam; her seven amazing children: Emma, David, Alyssa, Kate, Allie, Joseph, and Jacob; her sisters Mya (Fullmer) and Nell (Aburto); and countless friends whom she loved.

Mali was born on February 24, 1977 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Lawrence and Myrle Hegdahl. She spent her childhood there, and graduated from Chaplin Park high school in 1995. She attended BYU, earning her bachelor’s degree in Public Relations. She married Adam McKenzie of Preston, Idaho. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 24, 1999. Together they had seven children, and following law school they settled in Preston Idaho to raise their family.

Mali loved learning and knew the value of education. At the time of her passing she was pursuing a Master’s degree in Religion and Public Leadership from Boston University. She was also writing a book about the women who shaped Brigham Young University, and has spent years researching and being inspired by the strong and little-known women throughout its history who had quietly devoted their time and effort to building a place of learning. In addition, she was involved in the LDS Publishing Media and the Art (LDSPMA) program and had recently been named one of its vice presidents.

More than anything, Mali loved her family, and the Savior Jesus Christ. She wanted nothing more than to serve Him, teach her family to follow Him, and lead others to the peace He brings. She showed that desire by serving in various church callings in Relief Society, Young Women, and Primary organizations. She had a passion for family history and loved researching ancestry, both her own and for others.

Mali was astounding and loved by all who knew her. She truly strove to see people the way the Lord sees them, and served them with the love and charity she learned from following His example. These were her priorities. She leaves behind a legacy of love for others, and those that knew her were better because they did.
