Leora Elwell Evans

LOGAN, UTAH - - LEORA EVANS

LOGAN- Leora Evans, 95, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 9, 2009. She was born Dec. 29, 1913, in her parents' home in Preston, Idaho. She was the third of seven children and the oldest daughter of Isaac Elwell Jr. and Francis Louisa Carter.

Though her family struggled financially, especially following her father's death when she was fifteen, Lee was a happy and high achieving child. She loved music and dancing and as a young woman she won the Preston LDS Stake Gold and Green Ball dance contest with her older brother, Bud. She was an excellent student and excelled in her business classes. She was a hard worker and began working for J.C. Penney in her teens. She later worked for Honeywell for 35 years.

Lee married Fred Evans in Logan, Utah on Nov. 9, 1935, and they spent seventy happy years together. After working in Preston for a number of years, Fred and Lee moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1945 where Fred worked for Skaggs Drugs and Lee for J.C. Penney. They loved Phoenix and spent the rest of their lives there. They were lifelong fans of the Phoenix Suns and rarely missed a game. Lee and Fred loved Hawaiian music which led to visiting Hawaii 45 times- each time staying in the same room at the Surf Rider Resort in Waikiki.

While Lee and Fred never had children of their own, their home was open to all- and she was a surrogate mother to many nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and over the years quietly financed numerous missionaries. She and Fred were also very generous in supporting the educations and careers of many family members. Her home was always open to friends and family, and many found welcome refuge there.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fred, who died in 2005, and whom she missed dearly, by her parents, two brothers, E.L. (Bud) Elwell and Roy (Jack) Truman Carter and two sisters, Norma Nash McIntyre and Conna Dursteler. She is survived by her sister, Gwen and brother, Don, many nieces and nephews, and by her goddaughter, Tiffany Monroe. The family wishes to thank Gwen, Marsha, Larry, Tamra, Blake, Alison, Mary Lin, and Dr. Salisbury, as well as Alpine Hospice, and especially Clarissa, Carli, Sue and Josh for providing such devoted and loving care to Lee in her last few months.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the Preston Eighth Ward Chapel, 213 S. 2nd E., Preston, Idaho. Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 109 E. Oneida, Preston, and Thursday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Preston Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the LDS General Missionary Fund. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.webbmortuary.com
