LaRae Melva Leonhardt Godfrey (85) passed away February 5, 2014 at Logan Regional Hospital. She was born October 29, 1928 in Providence, Utah to Alma and Melva Rachel Shaffer Leonhardt. She was welcomed by one sister and four brothers. She later welcomed a younger sister and brother. LaRae's mother died when she was five years old. She went to live with her Grandma and Grandpa Shaffer and two aunts. She went to school in Millville, Providence, and Hyrum. She also attended classes at Utah State University regarding her work with persons with disabilities.
During high school, she worked at Modern Drug in Logan where she met Don Page Godfrey. They fell in love and married in the Logan LDS Temple. She then moved to Clarkston, Utah with Don to start their life together.
Don and LaRae raised four children and one foster son: Kendon (Jaydene), Steven (Paulette), Curtis (Marilyn), and Susan (Ken). Chee Smith Jr. joined the family for his education and to serve an LDS Mission.
LaRae was active in the LDS Church and served in many callings in Primary, Young Women, Relief Society, and Family History. She and Don served two missions; first in Spokane, Washington; and second for Logan Deseret Industries.
LaRae also stayed involved in her community. She served on committees for the Clarkston Float, town booth for the county fair, and other happenings. She was honored that she was the first woman to ever serve on the town council.
LaRae was known as a good cook but especially for her home-made rolls and her chocolates at Christmas time. She has been a hard worker all her life never wanting to be lazy.
LaRae was well liked every place she worked and had a talent for dealing well with people. She also had a special touch that helped her in her work with the disabled at Cache Employment and Training Center, where she worked for twenty-five years.
She is survived by her four children, 15 grandchildren, and 52 great grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, and one sister. LaRae was preceded in death by her husband Don and one grand-daughter Ginger.
The funeral will be Monday, February 10, 2014, at 12:00 noon in the Clarkston LDS Church, 25 East, 100 South with Bishop Jason Godfrey conducting. There will be a viewing Sunday evening, February 9th at the North Logan 12th Ward; 2540 North 400 East in North Logan, and Monday from 10:00 to 11:30 at the Clarkston Church.
