Preston , Idaho - - - Karma S. Spackman
Preston - Karma Swainston Spackman, 92, former Soda Springs resident passed away Thursday, January 31, 2013, at the Franklin County Transitional Care facility in Preston, Idaho. She was born June 13, 1920, in Franklin, Idaho to Merlin Ramsbottom and Edna Larita Whitehead Swainston, the first of three daughters. She spent her childhood in Whitney, Idaho. She attended schools in Franklin County; graduating from Preston High School in 1938. She married her high school sweetheart, Glenn Joseph Spackman on November 14, 1940 in the Logan Temple. Together they were blessed with four children, three sons and one daughter.
She and her husband lived in Preston, Burley, and Nampa, Idaho before finally settling in Soda Springs, Idaho in the early 1950's. She spent the first years of her marriage as a homemaker, but later worked as a retail clerk at Chadwick's Department store in Soda Springs, and as a custodian for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Karma was a devout, lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, filling many callings in the various auxiliaries of the church; the Relief Society, Primary, Young Women and Sunday School. She served many times in callings that involved the youth which she loved.
Karma's greatest joy in life was her family and she cherished the time she got to spend with them. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were of utmost importance to her. She always saw the good in people and in situations. Even in the last years of her life, though she struggled with health problems, she was always kind and pleasant
She was an accomplished seamstress and she had a special talent for crocheting. She was an excellent cook. She always planted a garden and kept a beautiful yard filled with flowers and vegetables.
Karma is survived by two of her sons, Richard (Sandra) Spackman of Rexburg, Idaho and Rod (Marguerite) Spackman of Manhattan Beach, California, her daughter, Pamela (Keith) Ward of Richmond, Utah; 6 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Patricia (Darrell) Farnes of Soda Springs, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents, Merlin and Edna Swainston; her husband, Glenn; a son, Dennis; a sister, Gloria Piper; and a niece, Sandra Foltz.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at 12:00 noon at Webb Funeral Home, 1005 South 800 East, Preston, Idaho. A viewing will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Webb Funeral Home and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday prior to services. Interment will be in the Whitney Cemetery. The family would like to give special thanks to all those at the Franklin County Transitional Care facility for their loving care. They have been so compassionate and kind. We would also like to thank Dr. Lynn Eskelson for his excellent care during these past several years.
