Preston, Idaho - - - John D. Sparrow
Preston - John Dahle Sparrow, 88, passed away December 29, 2011 in Ogden, Utah. He was born October 8, 1923 in Linrose, ID, a son of Charles Raymond Sparrow and Ethel May Dahle. He married Rhoda Cahoon on January 31, 1941. After graduating, he settled on a farm in Linrose. John and Rhoda had three children. Helen, and Rick, and they had a stillborn son, Jacob James.
John was an active member of the LDS Church. He served in the Sunday school for a number of years and many other church capacities. He was a scout master. He also served on the Franklin County ASCA board for a few years and also served as director of the Cache Valley Cheese plant for 15 years.
John learned very young to work. He loved to farm. He farmed with horses and he knew how to drive them on plows, rakes, mowers and wagons. He grew many crops of hay, peas, grain, potatoes and sugar beets. Johns started out with only a couple cows and grew the herd to over 150 milking cows. He built a dairy barn and continued to acquire land. He owned several hundred acres of irrigation land and a dry farm. John was a hard worker and he taught his children and grandchildren the value of hard work. He milked the cows, harvested the crops, worked the tractors, baler, swather, combine and moved sprinklers for irrigation. John was always upgrading his equipment. He loved to work the ground and get ready for planting. He loved harvest time to see the results of his labors. John also loved his horses.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Rhoda , of 70 years; his children: Rick Sparrow (Tami) of North Logan, Utah; Helen Carter (Roger) of Preston, Idaho; seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson, and a brother Bob Sparrow. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ethel Sparrow; three brothers Glen, Ray, Charles Clyde and three sisters, Erma, Verna and Ada, and a close nephew, Charles "Bud" Stevenson.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 12:00 noon in the Preston North Stake Center, 310 North State in Preston with Bishop Tom Madsen conducting. A viewing will be held Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 1005 South 800 East, in Preston and Tuesday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the stake center. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
