John Edward Phillips, 99, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, May 16, 2014 at his home in Hawthorne, California. He was born on February 1, 1915 in Park City, Utah, the son of Clifford John and Della Sulzer Phillips. He lived in Park City until his father died when he (John) was eight. His mother moved the little family to begin work in California. He met Doris Margie McRoberts in California and was married in the Mesa, Arizona Temple on November 22, 1938. They have four children: Dawna (Ben) Turnbow, of Weston, Idaho, John C. (Maritza) Phillips, of California, James E. (Fern) Phillips, of California, and Peter O. Phillips, of Utah.
John was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved the Lord and loved serving in many positions. He served as bishop three times, served a full time mission, and also served in the Los Angeles Temple as an officiator.
He is survived by his four children, Dawna, John, James, and Peter, two step-children Claudia Jensen and Mary Lou Heaps, 26 grandchildren, 68 great grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother Douglas Phillips, and one sister Dawna Roza. Preceding him in death are his parents, and his wife Doris, one sister Edith Kelsey, and one brother Robert Phillips. After Doris died in 1977, he married Bonnie Hansen who died in 1993.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Weston LDS chapel. A viewing will be held on Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church in Weston.
