FAIRVIEW, IDAHO JOHN KING
FAIRVIEW- John Grant King, 84, passed away on July 2, 2012, at the Heritage Home in Preston, Idaho. He was born Oct. 12, 1927, in Lewiston, Utah to LaVere and Leora Wiser King. He grew up with his two brothers, Newel and Norman and three sisters, Thelma, Ramona and Joann. He spent his childhood playing with cousins and neighbors and riding his pinto pony. His first job was delivering newspapers at age ten. By age fifteen, he was running the dry farm in Arbon Valley, which he called his castle, because both brothers were drafted into the Army and his father worked full-time for the Utah Fish and Game.
He attended school at North Cache then joined the Merchant Marines at seventeen. He later served in the Army in Japan for eighteen months where he became a Sergeant. Upon returning home, he married Darlene Jepson on April 8, 1949, in the Logan Temple. He then returned to the farm in Arbon Valley. He also worked at Paul's CafAC., McCune Motors, Ford Motors, V-1 Propane and Hill Field before buying the farm in Fairview. He dairy farmed for fifty years and raised corn, wheat, sugar beets and hay.
Some of his various church callings included ward clerk, young men's, stake missionary and working at the baptistery at the temple, but his favorite calling was stake athletic director. John was an avid sports enthusiast. It was a rare event to not see him at at PHS game. He supported kids and grandkids at dance recitals, band performances, games and plays. John and Darlene have children: Eloise (Kevin) Ogden; Garth (Anne) King; Darrell (Alice) King all of Fairview; and Chad (Kathleen) King of Farmington, Utah; seventeen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren with two on the way. He is also survived by three sisters, Thelma Woodland of Richmond, Utah; Ramona Bingham of Logan, Utah; Joann (Bruce) Griffin of Ogden, Utah; and by a sister-in-law, Venda King of Lewiston, Utah. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Newel and Norman King; by a son-in-law, Michael Bronson; a brother-in-law, Reed Woodland and by a sister-in-law, Irene King. The family would like to express their gratitude for the care and kindness shown by Hospice, The Heritage Home and the VA Hospital in Salt Lake City.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 20, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. in the Fairview Second Ward Chapel with Bishop Lewis Palmer conducting. Friends may call Thursday, July 19th from 6-8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 1005 South 800 East, Preston, Idaho, and Friday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church.
