Our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Ida Virginia Griffiths Spackman passed peacefully away on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, in her home in Preston, Idaho with her daughters by her side. She slipped away as quietly and gently as she lived. She was 99 years young.
Mom was born on July 7, 1925, to William Henry Griffiths and LaVeda Pilkington Griffiths in their home in Smithfield, Utah. She and her older sister, Dorothy, completed the family. Mom loved her schooling and friends in Smithfield and North Cache High School. She experienced the hardship and trials of the Great Depression. At the age of 17 at the outbreak of World War II, she went to work in Salt Lake City as a carhop for the Don Carlos BBQ (later known as Arctic Circle).
After a few years she moved back to Smithfield where she met the love of her life, Reed Spackman. She was working at the Drug Store and dad couldn’t resist her malted milk shakes, her smile, and the sparkle in her eyes. They were married on July 6, 1947.
Dad was working construction during this part of their lives and mom followed him making our home on wheels a heaven on earth. She had a knack for having “a place for everything and everything in it’s place.” We loved this time in our lives and traveled the Western States and into Canada for work. Mom and dad bought their home in Preston in 1954 and lived the rest of their lives in it. They loved their neighbors and friends through the years. Mom loved watching the children grow up and counting how many got off the bus every day after school. Mom always had candy on Halloween, little gifts at Christmas, and never forgot a birthday. They were blessed with three children; William Reed (Bill) (1948-2023), Rebecca Susan (Becky Porter), and Karen Leigh (Naylor).
Dad passed away in August of 2010 after 63 years of marriage. Losing her son, Bill, and her great granddaughter, Cenisha Porter, last year was very hard for her. She missed them both and thought they were having too much fun without her.
Mom was so excited for her 99th birthday and was able to celebrate it with many of her posterity in July. She was healthy and vibrant until the last couple of weeks when her health started to fail. Mom always had a smile for everyone, was always optimistic and positive. She never complained, even when she was in pain. She is our Miracle Mom.
We are glad she had the time to tell everyone how much she loved them. She leaves behind a large posterity, daughters Becky Porter and Karen Naylor. Son-in-laws Kent Porter and Jim Naylor. Daughter-in-law Carol Spackman, 15 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and 26 great-great grandchildren, a brother-in-law Stuart Spackman of Burley, Idaho and many nieces and nephews.
Thank you, mom, for your example and patience. We love you!
