Clifton, Idaho - - - Helen S. Rice
Clifton - Helen Shaffer Rice, 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at the Downey Care Center in Downey, Idaho. She was born on October 9, 1917 on the family farm in Preston, Idaho to John Martin and Julia Ann Nelson Shaffer. She weighed a little over four pounds and was kept warm in a shoebox placed on the oven door. Mom loved to dance and spent many happy hours doing so at the Persiana in Preston. She married Dad (Ted Rice) on October 18, 1941 and they were married for 69 years residing in Clifton, Idaho.
Mother loved growing a large vegetable garden and sharing the harvest. She cooked wonderful meals, sewed clothes for girls and dolls, and spent her spare time washing clothes in the wringer washer, drying them on the line before ironing them, and helping on the farm. Mom was well known for her near perfect haystacks. Young men loved working in the hay for mom and dad. Mom always had a home cooked meal ready at noon and then everyone took an hour nap in the cool basement before going back to work. Mom made the best fudge ever. Halloween brought the crowds, including parents who either came to the door or bribed their kids as they returned to the car with a roll of Helen's fudge. She had perhaps the longest duration calling in the LDS Church history, 60 years as the Sunday School secretary.
Mom and Dad raised four daughters, who she is survived by, Pauline McClendon, of Edgewood, NM; Lorraine (Bob) Phillips, of Clifton, ID; Kay Rice, of Orem, UT; and Betty Stearns, of Midvale, UT; eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. She was greeted in Heaven by her parents, her husband, siblings, and one great grandson. We love you Mom!
