H. Reed Fellows

January 10, 1936 — March 19, 2015

H. Reed Fellows

H. Reed Fellows, aged 79 years, left this earth to return to his home in Heaven on March 19, 2015, from complications related to heart disease. Reed was born on January 10, 1936, and raised in Preston, ID, by Verl Roper and Hilva Olson Fellows.

After experiencing many adventures growing up in Preston and graduating from Preston High School, Reed joined the U.S. Navy on December 1954. In the spring of 1956, he married Josephine Godderidge, and they had two children together: David and Mary Jo. Reed and Josephine divorced in 1960. In 1962, while on leave from his U.S. Navy service, Reed met Marlene Haslam, from Dayton, ID, at the Corner Café in Preston. Reed asked Marlene to go with him to a movie in Logan, Utah; two weeks later, on December 7, 1962, they were married! Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple. Reed and Marlene went on a honeymoon to Hawaii and ended up being stationed there for 18 months. They also lived in Seattle, Washington, when Reed was stationed on an ice breaker in the North and South Pole. The last place Reed and Marlene lived before moving back to Preston was Virginia Beach, Virginia. After traveling the country with Reed, Marlene settled in Preston in 1971, while Reed continued to tour the world until he retired from the U.S. Navy in April 1974. Following his U.S. Navy retirement, Reed was employed at Presto Products in Lewiston, Utah, as an electrician until his retirement in 1999.

Family was one of Reed’s greatest treasures. He and Marlene raised five children, who were so very important to him. Reed always wanted the best for his children, and tried to help and encourage them throughout his life. He enjoyed telling people about his children, their accomplishments, and sharing how proud he was of them. In more recent years, Reed experienced much joy from spending time with his grandchildren. Reed always looked forward to being with his children and grandchildren or even just receiving a phone call from them; it was one of the simplest ways to make him happy. His family will miss him immensely; we wish we could have one more moment to spend with him to say goodbye.

Reed was an avid fisherman throughout his life and tied fishing flies as a hobby for many years. He reveled in spending time on the water to fish and bringing friends and family to join him. He was sure to be found fishing several times each week during every season of the year until his health prevented him from doing so. He enjoyed being with people, was a good and caring friend, and had a great sense of humor. Reed’s humor and joking will be one of the things we will miss most about him.

Reed was preceded in death by his parents, Verl and Hilva Fellows, his father- and mother-in-law, David and Myrna Haslam, and his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Esther Fellows and his ex-wife Josephine and their infant daughter, Mary Jo Fellows. He is survived by his five children: David (Kaylene) Fellows, Orofino, Idaho; Tim (Teresa) Fellows, Preston, Idaho; Ron (Jamie) Fellows, Logan, Utah; Suzanne Fellows, Logan, Utah; and Carol (John) Kirkpatrick, Pocatello, Idaho. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Geneva Fellows, Las Vegas, NV; his brothers and sister-in-laws: Lloyd and Delores Haslam (Crow Heart, WY); Bob and Shirley Haslam (Tooele, UT); and Carl and Kathy Haslam (Thatcher, ID); 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

During the funeral, Reed’s family will have time for friends and family to share their memories of Reed to celebrate his life and express what he meant to them. We want to hear your stories so we have the memories to keep with us. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 27, 2015, at 12:00 PM, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Third Ward church located at 155 North 2nd West, Preston, Idaho, with Bishop Ron Smellie conducting.
