Smithfield - Guy Lane Buttars, 87, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at his home in Smithfield, Utah. He was born October 9, 1922 in Lewiston, Utah, the third son of Orsen Morris and Elva Layne Buttars. He was raised and educated at Lewiston and North Cache.

He served in the US Army from April 1944-December 1945. After basic training he was sent to the Eruopean Theater in WWII and was captured by the Germans. He was a prisoner of war from November 1944-May 1945. After returning to the United States and completing his service he was honorable discharged.

His work experiences were on the family farm and helping neighbors, selling roofing, Lake Crystal Salt Company, Union Pacific Railroad, Olaf Nelson Construction Company, and finally for Jack B. Parson Companies, where after 30 years of service he took early retirement due to health concerns. He married Afton Rada Stoddard on July 10, 1947 in the Logan LDS Temple. They lived in Lewiston, Saline, and Richmond for 35 years, before moving to St George, Utah for 13 years and finally settling in Smithfield in October of 2000. After retirement Guy and Afton enjoyed traveling on tours and visiting family all across the United States.

They were blessed with nine children, Shelia Albrecht, Evanston, WY; Robert Guy Buttars, of Brigham City, UT; Warren Stoddard Buttars, Steven Irwin (Sally) Buttars, of Richmond, UT; Christy Miller, of Cleveland, OH; Larry Morris Buttars, of Logan, UT; Blake Layne (Sharon) Buttars, of Dewitt, IA; Maren Kaye Seamons, of Fairview, ID; and Joanne Petersen, of Hyrum, UT;17 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren, brothers Val, Arlen, and Gail, extended family, our girl Friday Maria and her family Gary Samantha, Josh, Josh, Jace, and Courtney Egbert, Sheila Welch, Bill Staltzer George Sirotnak, Ray Jessop, and Linda Hanks. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Warren, son-in-law Boyd Seamons, and brothers Maurice and Vurel.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 26, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Smithfield 10th Ward Chapel, across from Sky View High School, with Bishop Peter Kruse conducting. A viewing will be held Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home's new location, 1005 South 800 East in Preston and Monday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church in Smithfield.
