(Gerald) Chad Bunn “Heavy on the Mister,” affectionately known as “Pops,” “Dad,” “Uncle Chad,” and most importantly, “Grandpa”passed away peacefully on March 17, 2025, in Provo, Utah, surrounded by his family. He was 61 years old.
Chad was born on June 6, 1963, in Logan, Utah, to Gerald Don and Connie Jean Phillips Bunn of Richmond, Utah. He grew up in Cache Valley and considered it his "slice of heaven on earth, the land of milk and honey.” He graduated from Sky View High School in Smithfield in 1981 before starting at BYU in 1982. After attending for a year, he left to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Miami, Florida, mission.
Chad deeply loved BYU and began working with the football team in 1984 as a team manager. In 1989, legendary coach LaVell Edwards offered him the role of Video Coordinator for BYU Athletics, where he trained at Notre Dame before returning to Provo to lead the program. In 1994, Chad attended the founding meeting of what would become the Collegiate Sports Video Association (CSVA) in Notre Dame, Indiana. When he left, he was not only a founding father of the industry association but also its very first President, serving four consecutive terms. His contributions and leadership led to the unquestioned advancement of the role of Video Coordinator everywhere. He continued as chairman and a respected leader of the association for the remainder of his career, earning admiration and love from fellow Video Coordinators across North American sports.
A proud resident of Spanish Fork for over 30 years, Chad was passionate about serving his community. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club, serving in both Utah and Idaho, and was heavily involved in local and state politics. His love for civic engagement and service was evident in everything he did.
Chad was also a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in many callings, including Elders Quorum President, Ward Mission Leader, and various teaching roles. His faith was a guiding force in his life.
Beyond his professional and church service, Chad’s greatest joy was his family. While he loved being a husband, father, and friend, his favorite title of all was Grandpa. He cherished every moment with his grandchildren, Josie Yvonne and Aiden Gerald Rhoades, and found immense happiness in watching them grow. He also loved traveling, especially with BYU, and whenever he could, he enjoyed being on a horse, taking in the beauty of Cache Valley.
Chad is survived by his beloved wife, Lorie (Petersen) Bunn of Spanish Fork; his daughters, Elisha (Patrick) Rhoades of Bluffdale and McKella (Lorenzo) Crapo of American Fork; his treasured grandchildren, Josie Yvonne and Aiden Gerald Rhoades; and his sister, Jeana (Kent) Frederick of North Ogden.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Millar, Dr. Barrett, and the incredible nurses and medical staff who cared for Chad in the ICU. Their kindness, dedication, and support brought comfort during his final days.
