Preston, Idaho - - - Gene Austin
Preston - Gene Austin, 70, passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah surrounded by his family. He was born December 5, 1940 in Lewiston, Utah to Melvin and Opal Austin. He married his childhood sweetheart, Tamra Louise Layne on September 30, 1960. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. They just recently celebrated their Golden Anniversary.
As a young man he learned the importance of responsibility and working hard. He had a smart mechanical mind and an ability to understand how things worked. He could build, repair, or maintain any machinery, tool or vehicle. He amazed us all as he designed and built Riverside RV with only the blue prints and plans being in his mind. He loved being together as a family, especially the family parties and Easter egg hunts. Gene lived a life of service and leaves behind a legacy of helping others, being a good neighbor and friend.
He loved the outdoors and enjoyed the memorably hunting trips with his sons and grandsons. He owned a piece of property, nestled on the banks of the beautiful Bear River. It was a grandson tradition, as they got their hunting license, to be able to hunt the ravines and plateaus on grandpa's property. May a "first buck" was secured with Grandpa by their side.
He was an excellent driver and proved his ability when he traveled thousands of miles as a livestock dealer. With the Shadow West business, he drove a motor home, pulling a trailer and as SUV. The trailer he designed and built, would carry product in the front compartment and piggy-back an SUV on the rear. The cargo fleet was 58 plus feet. The Shadow West business took him numerous times from Houston, Texas to Denver, Colorado, Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Calgary Alberta, Canada without a single accident.
Gene was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various callings. He especially enjoyed the association he had with others while serving on the High Council and in the Winder Ward Bishopric. He was a faithful home teacher for many years.
He is survived by his wife Tamra, and four children, Brent (Kimberly) Austin, Richard (Lisa) Austin, Cheri Cole, and Rebecca (Mark) Kent, 17 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Tammy Paige, and a grandson Chase Bosen.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in the Winder Ward LDS Chapel with Bishop Alan Atkinson conducting. A viewing will be held Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home's new location, 1005 South 800 East in Preston, and Tuesday from 11:00-12:30 at the church. Interment will be in the Preston Cemetery.
