Gary LaMonte Wheeler, 85, passed away on May 28, 2023, at home where he was surrounded by familiar faces and gentle gestures of loving care. He was born on September 9, 1937, in Lewiston, Utah. He is the son of Athel LaMonte Wheeler and Nelda Jackson Wheeler. Gary married Beth Pitcher Wheeler on February 20, 1958, in the Logan, Utah Temple.
In his youth he enjoyed many adventures with his horse Betsy and his small 2N Ford tractor. He attended a National Boy Scout Jamboree in California. He loved to play baseball and basketball. He enjoyed singing in the school choir. Dad graduated from North Cache High School in 1955.
Gary made his home and raised his family as a dairy farmer in Lewiston, Utah. He was often found working in his shop welding a broken manure scraper, using his mechanical skills to repair a tractor, or being creative to build furniture for the house. After selling the dairy herd and retiring his milking boots, he worked for Utah State University in housekeeping. While working on his farm, Dad served in The Church of Jesus Christ and was involved with his community.
After retiring from USU, Gary and Beth served as a senior couple in the Tennessee Knoxville Mission, serving in areas around Virginia and Kentucky. Continuing his service, he became an Employment Specialist with Beth helping people secure work. Dad had a gift for talking to everyone and making them feel at ease.
Gary is survived by his wife, Beth Pitcher Wheeler of Lewiston, Utah; by his son and four daughters, Randen Wheeler of Cub River, Idaho; Sue Ann Smith (Greg) of Smithfield, Utah; Trudy Zilles of Lewiston, Utah; Elizabeth Krebs (Jody) of Lewiston, Utah; Jeannie Astle (James) of Millville, Utah; by 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren and a sister, Renee Karren of Lewiston, Utah.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, a son in-law, Kip N Harmon, and by three grandchildren, Dusty Wheeler, Cameron Zilles and Joshua Krebs. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Nancy & Jeanette and to the IHC Hospice Team.
