Fred, the oldest of ten children of Danish immigrant parents, began his career of providing for his family at the age of 5 when he began milking one of the family cows each morning and night. Carrying water for 200 chickens and cleaning the coops were weekly duties. The small dairy and thinning, hoeing and topping sugar beets continued through his early married life providing a small income.
In 1943 during WWII his name came up for "draft." He had a wife and two children, a widowed mother with small children whom he was helping, and he worked in an agricultural field " all considered possible reasons to be exempted from serving. Just before the call was issued, he was informed that because of the importance of his dance orchestra on the "morale of the troops" and the community, he would be asked to stay home. With his orchestra, he played regularly for over 30 years for servicemen, church, school, and wedding/anniversary dances.
He was DHIA Supervisor for 32 years serving in Cache, Wasatch, Summit, Emory, Daggett, and Uintah counties. They left Heber and "milk testing" to join his cousin in business in Tremonton where he stayed for five years. He loved his farm in Cornish and was willing to work other jobs to support it. He began work as a Quality Control Supervisor for Presto products where he retired after 19 years at age 75. He continued mowing lawns for friends and neighbors this year until the snow fell.
He was a people person and loved kids. He was "Santa Claus" the whole year round.
He was a man who made friends wherever he went because he was willing to love and share freely.
