Erma Jean Hobbs was born on January 14, 1937, in Preston, Idaho. She was the second of five children born to John Leslie Hobbs and Florence Willardsen. She had an older sister, Bonnie, two brothers, Bruce and Kent, and a younger sister, Angie. Their family lived on a farm in Weston, Idaho, outside of Preston. She attended West Side High School in Dayton where she was a cheerleader, a member of the marching corps, junior class president, and band majorette, though she quickly admits there were only 30 in her graduating class.
She attended BYU for one year after graduating and then returned to the Preston area. There she met and married Terry DeVere Hopson on September 19, 1958, in the Logan Temple. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service so they moved several times and lived in Darby, Montana, Kamas, Utah, Dutch John, Utah, Ogden,Utah, Carson City, Nevada, and Vernal, Utah. They divorced in 1990 and Jean moved back to Preston.
Jean has three children, Pamela Nielson (Mike), Curtis, and Rochelle Robinson (Dale). She was always very proud of her children and their accomplishments and was happy to tell others about them. She went on to add eight grandchildren of whom she was also very proud, and she currently has 12 great-grandchildren.
Jean worked for most of her life as a teacher’s aide in all levels from Kindergarten through high school. She completed her career as an aide at Preston High School for 12 years, retiring in 2002. Three years after retiring, she moved to a retirement condominium in South Jordan to be closer to two of her children. She then moved to Sagewood at Daybreak in October of 2019.
Jean was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her life. She served in many leadership positions and enjoyed living in various wards as she moved around. Her main hobby was making Barbizon quilts for her friends and family. Jean suffered a fall in her apartment and ultimately passed away two weeks later on March 15, 2025. She is preceded in death by her parents, three siblings, and a granddaughter, Allyson Grace. She has been welcomed to her eternal home by these and many others who loved Jean.
