KERN, Earl Dean, 87 passed away Sunday, April 15, 2012 in Tucson, Arizona after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Preston, Idaho on June 14, 1924, the second child of four sons born to Alfred and Amy Kern. After high school he worked as a surveyor and briefly for the IRS in Portland, OR. He then earned an accounting degree from Brigham Young University and spent his entire career working for US Steel.
Earl married Edith Bodily in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on August 27, 1947. Together they raised 4 children and lived in American Fork, UT, San Francisco and Palo Alto, CA, and Bethel Park and Pittsburgh, PA. After retirement they returned to Preston to live until Edith passed away in 2002.
Earl was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and served the church in many capacities, including as a member of the Pittsburgh, PA Stake Presidency. He was an avid fly fisherman and loved riding his Paso Fino gelding, "Caballo". He was a remarkable hands-on grandfather who shared his love of fishing and riding with his children and grandchildren.
For over 20 years Earl spent the winter months in Tucson. He married Irma Cooke of Tucson on June 13, 2004 and moved to Arizona permanently four years ago. He continued to ride his beloved horse with Irma and friends until a few months before his death.
Earl is survived by his wife, Irma; his three children, Sharon (Michael) Taylor of Preston, ID; Karl B. (Martha) Kern of Tucson, AZ and Traci (Jeffrey) Cline of Maple Valley, WA: 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; also by Irma's four children Kimberly (Gary) Harding, Escalenate, UT, Bradly (Ann) Cooke, Los Alamos, NM, Derek (Laura) Cooke, Oro Valley, AZ and Bryce (Debbie) Cooke, Bradley, IL; 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Scott B. Kern.
Services will be held, on Monday, April 23, 2012 in the LDS Mapleton Ward Chapel, 5307 E. Cub River Road, at 11:00 am. The funeral service will be preceded by a visitation/gathering at 10:00 am.
