Dineen Choules Eberhard

Dineen Choules Eberhard, 84, passed away April 22, 2025, in Murray, Utah from complications of pneumonia. She was born August 1, 1940, in Preston, Idaho, the daughter of Oliver James and Myrtle Choules. She was married to Ernest Jan Eberhard on March 6, 1969. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.

Born the last of six children, Dineen was a devoted daughter. Throughout her upbringing, she provided great comfort to her mother, who had been deeply affected by the loss of her son Max (Dineen’s older brother) as a soldier in World War II. Dineen was raised in Fairview, Idaho and attended Preston High School. She was crowned Miss Franklin County in 1958. After high school, she attended Utah State University, graduating in 1962. She accepted a position teaching speech and drama at Ben Lomond High School in Ogden, Utah. On a whim, she and a friend applied to be stewardesses for United Airlines. To her surprise, she was selected to attend flight training and was offered a permanent position. She flew as a United Airlines stewardess during the Golden Age of Travel from 1964-1971, being based in both New York City and San Francisco.

Dineen made a last-minute decision to attend her 10-year high school reunion and there she was reacquainted with a classmate, Jan Eberhard, who was also single and living in Minneapolis, MN at the time. They began a cross-country romance and were married on March 6, 1969. After a few years in San Francisco they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where their 2 daughters were born; Julie, on June 30, 1971, and Lisa Nicole, on December 30, 1972. Jan worked for the Bureau of Land Management which took them to Cedar City, Utah and back to Salt Lake City where they raised their family.

Dineen was an avid reader, never without a book in hand. Her love of books led her to become an elementary school librarian for over 20 years. She also had a great love for and interest in other cultures and traveled extensively throughout her life. Both world and national politics were of great interest to her and she often had strong opinions. Dineen loved music and the arts and sought out the lovely things in life. She exemplified grace, poise, and kindness. She had a love for animals and had a house full of birds, chinchillas, a desert tortoise, and always a beloved dog at her side.

A kind and devoted friend, Dineen was always ready with a listening ear. She cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She always had a genuine interest in others’ lives and put importance on small kindnesses such as sending handwritten cards and letters.

Dineen leaves behind two daughters: Julie Eberhard of Sandy, Utah and Lisa (Jason) Mendenhall of Heber City, Utah, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jan Eberhard, by her parents, and by her four sisters and one brother.
