Dick Buttars

CLARKSTON, Utah - - - Dick Buttars

Dick Buttars, 69, passed away Saturday evening June 9, 2012 surrounded by his family at his home in Clarkston due to complications from recently diagnosed pancreatic cancer. Dick was born November 12, 1942 in Clarkston to Leonard and Sarah Thompson Buttars, he was the youngest of 6 children. Dad was raised on the family farm and learned how to work hard with his dad and brothers. Dad always had a couple of dogs and a horse to ride. He has always enjoyed farm work and farm animals and continued to run his own small farm as a hobby right to the end.

Dad attended grade school in Clarkston, junior high in Smithfield, and graduated from North Cache high school in Richmond in 1961. He was a very smart man and remembered almost everything he ever read. He helped all of his children learn to love reading. He joined the Army National Guard Utah in 1963, he had many good stories about his service spent at Fort Sill in Oklahoma and Fort Polk in Louisiana, as well as Fort Douglas here in Utah. He was honorably discharged in 1969, at the rank of Sergeant with the 140th Artillery unit.

He married Welda Jacobson on September 28, 1968. The lived in Logan for a few years, then Richmond and built their home back in Clarkston in 1977. They have lived in Clarkston ever since. Mom and Dad were able to spend 43 years together. They have 4 children and 12 grandchildren. Grandpa loved his grandchildren very much, and enjoyed playing with them, they will greatly miss him.

Dad has worked many different jobs over the years. When he was younger he worked several campaigns at the sugar factory in Garland. He spent several years working for Hesston as a supervisor, and even after switching careers later on, he always talked about the time spent there. When Hesston relocated from Cache Valley dad spent some time working for Thiokol and Utah Agricorp. Then he spent many years as a welder for Integrated Systems Engineering building structural components for electronic signs, scoreboards, and even bungee jumping towers. He was very proud of the projects he did for this company, some of which are in sports stadiums, airports and even in other countries. After Integrated Systems was bought out a couple of times and then shut down, he worked at Gossner foods for a short time and then worked for Clarkston City, helping his son with taking care of the town cemetery. Dad also took care of the Clarkston park and town square. Dad was always proud of the work he did and no matter what job he was working, he liked to talk about the projects he was involved with.

Dad enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing. He always looked forward to the yearly steelhead fishing trip to the Salmon River in Idaho. Dad enjoyed gardening and always grew a large, and very nice, vegetable garden. He and mom have passed their love of gardening on to all of their children. As a young man, dad played a lot of sports, mainly softball and basketball. He was an excellent softball player. When he was younger he also enjoyed driving his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and his 1966 Chevelle Supersport and he loved to take people for rides. Later on Dad still enjoyed going for rides, especially around the loop in Clarkston.

He is survived by his wife Welda; and his children, Julie (Cody) Hess of Honeyville, UT, Jill (Bryan) Goodsell of Clarkston, UT, Rod (Jessica) Buttars of Clarkston, UT, and Brenda (Aaron) Smith of Logan, UT and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Maurine Godfrey of Clarkston, UT, Calvin (Renate) Buttars of North Ogden, UT, Esther (Norvell) Thompson of Roy, UT, Norris (Karen) Buttars of Clarkston, UT, and Norma (Jim) Rollins of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Sarah, father and mother in law, Weldon and Wanda Jacobson, brothers in law Dale Godfrey and Pete Jacobson.

We will miss Grandpa very much.

Dad and Mom and their family all love animals and request that any donations you wish to make in his name go to the Cache Humane Society.
