De grew up splitting his time between the family's home in Preston and helping run the family farm in Treasureton. He enjoyed participating in all school activities and loved sports, he played three years on the basketball team, and was elected student body president his senior year. He met the love of his life in high school, Eunice Dunkley and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple November 6, 1939. They were blessed with five children.

He was later transferred to Las Vegas, Nevada where they lived for 2 years. In April 1944 De was called to serve in the Army. When he came home from the war they lived in Ogden, Utah for a short time. In 1944 Dee's father split his farm between Le Roy and De Ralph. De and Eunice moved to Treasureton and remodeled the Conlin home and he went back to his passion, farming.

During the 35 years they spent on the farm, De Ralph served as bishop for six years in the Treasureton ward, at this time a new church was built. It was completed in 1952 and dedicated by Spencer W. Kimball in 1953. He served two terms on the Preston school board as treasurer; and several years on the soil conservation committee.
