Cora Tompkins Johnson

Smithfield, Utah - - - Cora L. Johnson

Smithfield - Cora Lee Tomkins Johnson, 76, passed away January 13, 2013 at the Logan Regional Hospital in Logan, Utah surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 8, 1936 in Lafayette, Indiana to Calvin and Thelma Robertson Tompkins. Those were depression times but life gradually improved when her father found employment in California. Cora, her two sisters and her brother, all young children, were put on a bus and sent to their father until their mother could join them. Such a trip would be unthinkable nowadays and she often talked of that ordeal.

Growing up in the San Francisco area housing projects, and with perseverance and hard work, she earned a liberal arts degree from the University of California. She met and married Warren Johnson in 1959. They traveled widely with the military, where five daughters were born. Leaving the armed forces they arrived in Smithfield in 1977.

Her keen sense of perception enabled her to recognize and with her husband embrace the restored gospel. There has never been any looking back. Cora served devoutly in many church positions, was in the Relief Society presidency, an extraction missionary and many Primary callings. She was a very private person, more so when health issues made in increasingly difficult for her to get out and about. In her later years she was pretty much restricted to her home. She delighted in her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Warren, of Smithfield, daughters Terasa Pratt, of Smithfield; Erica (Ed, deceased) Rich, of Weston, ID; Leiza (Brad) Povey, of Clifton, ID; Brenna (Kelly) Steed, of Casper, WY; and Dana (Jared) Chiara, of Price, UT; she is also survived by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a sister Verna (Leonard) Banks, of Hamilton, MT. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister.

A private family service will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 in the Weston Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 1005 South 800 East in Preston. Interment will be in the Weston Cemetery.
