Charles Saul Hyer

Charles Saul Hyer was born November 8, 1934 at Logan, Utah. He grew up in Lewiston, Utah. Chuck’s father died when he was 11 years old. He was the youngest of five children and the only son. He became very involved at an early age in running the family farm. He also enjoyed playing football, participating in rodeo events and serving in the Army Reserves. After high school, he went to Snow College on a football scholarship until he was called to serve in the Australia Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

After returning from his mission, Chuck attended Utah State University and developed a great love and loyalty for the school where he served as Student Body Vice President. He met Karen Ann Thorpe while attending USU. Chuck and Karen have been married for 65 years. They have raised six children together.

Chuck was an entrepreneur at heart and involved in many business ventures during his life. He started in farming and then founded the Hyer Cattle Company in Shelley, Idaho. He was also a cattle buyer for other companies and developed a large cattle ranch in the Malad Valley. During his life he and Karen owned and ran a trucking company, a concrete company, a gas and oil distribution company, several Chevron gas stations and he was heavily involved in banking businesses in Utah and the Bank of Star Valley in Wyoming.

He loved the Scouting program and earned both an Eagle Scout and Silver Beaver award. He has helped many young men in their quest to earn their scouting awards. He has been a guiding influence to many during his lifetime, always willing and happy to give advice and counsel.

Chuck has faithfully fulfilled many assignments for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint, including Bishop, Counselor in a Stake Presidency, Young Adult Bishoprics and Bishop and missions with Karen to the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

His greatest joys in life have been his marriage to Karen and his family of five daughters, one son and over 80 posterity. He did his best to teach them to be good workers and also to love traveling and playing together. We are grateful that he built a place at Glendale where we could gather and enjoy each other’s company and keep the family relationship strong.

Chuck said he felt life had been good to him but he was looking forward to eternity and a chance to get to know his father better.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Karen Hyer of Preston, Idaho, five daughters and one son: Julie (Paul) Kelley, Jan (Cordell) Hatch, Kristi (John) Berryhill, Shannon (Jerre) Tews, Charri (Bob) Hugo, Andrew (Shannon) Hyer, and one sister, Bernice McCowin. Chuck and Karen have 25 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a great granddaughter Nora Brook Kelley.

The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Assisted Living and the Hands of Hope for their loving care of Chuck over the last nine months.
