Cal Kunz

Calvin (Cal) Cecil Kunz was born in Logan, Utah in 1940 to Cecil Kunz and Margaret Veloy Bair Kunz. He died of accidental causes on June 9, 2018.  He was hiking in Logan Canyon with family and enjoying the mountains he loved.  He was known for picking up trash everywhere he went because he believed in leaving a place better than he found it.  While packing out trash, Cal slipped and fell.  As family, we are grateful for the beautiful day he enjoyed prior to this, and are especially thankful for the emergency services and other hikers who gave assistance.

Calvin was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Roberts Kunz, his parents, and his brother, Michael D. Kunz. He is survived by his siblings, Bart (Linda) Kunz of Loveland, Colorado, sister-in-law Kathleen (Michael) Kunz of Preston, Idaho, Pat (Odell) Bodrero of Mendon, Utah, Clyde (Brian) Kunz of Tucson, Arizona, and Warren (Michelle) Kunz of Logan, Utah.  His children, Kristina Kunz of Idaho Falls, Kevin (Heather) Kunz of Ammon, Idaho, and Craig (Callie) Kunz of Whitney, Idaho will miss him terribly, as will his seven grandchildren, Christian, Nicholas, Lauren, Sarah, Russell, Tyson, and Ethan.

He would hate for us to tell you (he was a humble guy), but Cal was a veteran of the United States Air Force, served as an intelligence officer in Vietnam, was activated at Hill Air Force Base during Desert Storm, and served with honor. He had a career as a licensed contractor after retiring from the Air Force.  His greatest joy was being a grandfather and sharing ice cream at every meal.

Cal requested that no funeral or viewing be held.  In his own words, “If you knew him, he is now gone.  If you didn’t, you’re too late.”  We’d like to add, if you knew him, you were so fortunate.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Larsen-Sant Library in Preston, Idaho, or the University of Utah Medical School.  To honor Cal, pick up some litter along your way. . .
