LEWISTON, UTAH- Arthur "Art" Gilbert Hymas passed away Saturday, August 20, 2011. He was 80 years old. Art was born October 9, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Merrill Davis Hymas and Ida Delvene Field Hymas. He was the second child and oldest son. His family lived in Poplar Grove, Utah until he was nine and then they moved to the Bello farm in Hunter, Utah. Growing up in the Great Depression, he learned to work hard. His mother commented that "as a young boy of 9 years old, he did the work of a man." He served an LDS Mission in the Great Lakes Mission. On July 1, 1955, he married Shirley Carlisle in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with seven children; one boy and six girls. He was a cabinet maker for many years building cabinetry for LDS chapel clerk's offices. The highlight of Dad's life was being able to serve in the temple as an officiator for just over 12 years. This work was very important to him. If there was a family event scheduled, we needed to schedule it around his temple duties.
Art is preceded in death by his parents, older sister, Merrilene Todd and son-in-law Earl Gillmore. He is survived by his wife, Shirley and their children; Mike (Stefenee), Cheryl (David) Gregory, Karen Gillmore, Debbie Hymas, Sandra (Marty) Lee, Patty (Shane) Barnes and Connie (Morgan) Bitner, 24 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his step-mother, Ione and his siblings, Richard (Sumiko), Merrill, Jr. "Dude" (Sheryl), Glenna Ridge, June (Clifford) Ames and Rodger (Jean).
The family wishes to thank Dr. David Beckstead for his years of care and to the Lewiston First Responders for their valiant efforts on Saturday.
