Allen W Dunn left this mortal journey on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at age 89. He was born August 10, 1928 the oldest child and only son of Merlin and Ruth Dunn, in Montpelier, Idaho. He spent his childhood on a farm in a small town where he spent his days hunting, camping, and playing sports. He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1947 as a football, basketball, and track all-star, lettering all three years.
Allen met Beverly Mackey at a church dance in Fish Haven in 1948. He was 21. She was 17. He said she was his brown eyed beauty and the love of his life. After a whirlwind courtship they married in the Logan Temple on August 5, 1949 and made their home in Preston. They walked this life together for over 68 years. Together Allen and Beverly raised their six children, and enjoyed watching their 25 grand-children and 50 great grand-children grow. He was a true supporter, and to all his family their number one fan.
Allen retired from Garrett Freight Lines after 35 years of service driving truck and office management. He was an industrious and hard worker. But it was his 60 years in the Boy Scout program that was his true life’s work, a labor he loved. Allen was truly at home when he was in his wood shop and he loved the feel of good wood in his hands. If you wanted it, he could build it, and he would. He was generous with his trade and was a skilled woodworker. As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, many know Allen, too, from his twenty two years of cherished service within the walls of the Logan Temple.
Allen loved Thanksgiving celebrations that brought his family together. He loved reading, gardening, hot pickles, and the Bar J Wranglers. Allen will be remembered for his bright blue eyes, his strong hands, and his hugs that said “You are loved.” His legacy is that of faith, testimony, service, and love.
Allen leaves behind his wife and children: Bruce Dunn of Preston, McKay (Danielle) Dunn of Franklin, Thomas (Mary Ann) Dunn of Rexburg, Deaune (Kelly) Burdette of Ogden, Sherlauna (Shorty) Beckstead of Clifton, and Travis (Jean) Dunn of Logan; his sisters: JoAnn, Nada Jean, and Merla; and the many who called him grandpa.
Allen’s love language was ‘time.’ We invite those who knew and loved him to share a bit of theirs with the family at the viewing to be held on Sunday evening from 6-7:30 pm at the Webb Funeral Home 1005 South 800 East. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11, following the family prayer at the chapel at 213 South 2nd East. Burial in the Preston Cemetery.
