PRESTON, IDAHO- Alice Ruth Smith Thomas Castleton, 97, passed away peacefully on Dec. 10, 2013, at the Franklin County Transitional Care Center in Preston, Idaho. She was born April 15, 1916, in Arimo, Idaho to Thomas Charles and Olive Elizabeth Jenkins Smith. She married Nathan Martin Thomas on Oct. 25, 1939, in the Salt Lake Temple. After his passing in 1972, she later married Leon J. Castleton from Malad, Idaho.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities including counselor in Primary and the Relief Society, teacher in both Primary and Sunday School and she and Nathan were dance directors in Mutual.

For long as can be remembered, she has been a good and caring neighbor, taking home baked treats to the new family on the block as well as those who needed a little extra kindness. Alice was a master at handiwork, making cutwork pillow cases, embroidered dish towels, quilts and afghans all of which she would give away to family members and friends. She also enjoyed dancing, walking, reading and spending time with her family.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Nathan and Leon; by a son-in-law, Rey Naegle ; by a grandson, Brian Dalley; by her twin brother and three additional brothers and by four sisters. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Naegle of Preston; Margaret (Steve) Westerberg of Preston; and Wilma "Billee" (Brent) Dalley of Farmington, Utah; also by her five step children, Don (Lola Beth) Castleton of Pleasant View, Utah; Douglas (Kathryn) Castleton of Sandy, Utah; Lowell (Marsha) Castleton of Provo, Utah; Helen (Stuart) Duncan of Orem, Utah; and Jean (Con) Alder of Farmington, Utah. She has eleven beloved grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren (with one on the way) and five great-great grandchildren (with one on the way).

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at noon in the Preston Third Ward Chapel, 155 N. 2nd W., Preston, Idaho with Bishop Jay McKenzie conducting. Friends may call Monday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Preston Cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Franklin County Transitional Care Center for their tender and loving care with dignity and respect always towards our mother.
