Alan B. Short of Preston, Idaho passed away on September 30th 2013 in a car accident near the Utah/Idaho border on his way home from work. Alan was born November 6, 1975 in Salt Lake City, UT where he also grew up and attended school.
Alan always had a big heart and was always lending a helping hand. He was very intuitive about the needs of others. He was most often the first person to introduce himself to others and make them feel welcome in whatever environment it was in. He rooted for the underdog and cheered on the champions of life all the same. His short time here allowed him to travel the world where he gained experience and a fullness of life.
Alan was a very fun loving and laid back individual. Everyone he met enjoyed his company and he was always quick with a quip to break the ice. He was known to play quite a few practical jokes and nearly all of his friends have fallen victim. His personality shined in most any social situation and usually quite a bit with his family. He loved spending time as a son, brother and uncle and tried to create opportunities to create memories whenever possible.
Alan was very active in sports and began to collect friends at an early age. He started to play rugby in high school and it became his lifelong passion. He joined the Haggis Rugby Club in 1995 and flourished as a player, referee and unofficial coach up to present day. He helped them to win their 2005 USA Rugby Division II National Championship.
He served an LDS mission to Dallas/Forth Worth, TX and was able to positively impact the lives of so many there with his outgoing personality and his enthusiasm for the gospel. Alan had a quiet spirituality that had so much strength. He was an active member and was very recently called to a position that he was so excited for and gave him a chance to show his dedication to his faith.
On March 19, 2008 he became a father to Isabella Marie Short and she changed his life forever. He was a dedicated father with a strong desire to teach her the great things of life, take her on adventures and make her smile. She will always be his Bella.
Alan met Brittney Christensen and began dating in August of 2010. Their long distance romance lasted for over a year until Brittney moved to Salt Lake City, UT from Boise, ID. They were married in the very spot they met at Redfish Lake in Stanley, ID on June 2, 2012. Each of them truly felt they'd found their soul mate. Together they shared a love for camping, hiking, fishing, building and growing gardens, adventuring, road tripping, raising dogs and chickens. Alan was extremely enthused about growing a garden and if anyone has seen how many unknown varieties of tomatoes he has then you understand just a little. Their home in Riverdale was where Alan gained his greatest pleasure tinkering, fixing, playing, building and learning. He thrived in this tiny corner of the world and expressed many times how he couldn't be happier anyplace else. He had found his best self with his best friend.
In August of 2012 Brittney became pregnant and their sweet daughter Lucy Flora Short was born on May 26, 2013. Alan chose Flora for her middle name because he wanted to have something to represent the love he had for nature. Lucy has been absolute sunshine in their lives and shown them both a greater capacity to love.
His wonderful spirit and inviting personality will be terribly missed. His memory will live on in all of the wonders of nature and on every rugby pitch.
He is survived by his wife Brittney Short and daughter Lucy Short of Preston, ID and daughter Isabella Short of Salt Lake City. He is also survived by his parents Barry and Linda Short of Washington, UT, sister Jill Worlton (Jon) of St. George, brother Devin Short (Kandi) of Herriman, UT and brother Jason Short of Salt Lake City, UT.
